Walking into your local computer store with the goal of purchasing the best graphics card can sometimes be a hard decision. Here's some facts that you, the hard working, money making, consumer should think about before you spend the big bucks on an awesome graphics card.
First off, you must know the company's history. ATI's graphics card chipsets are notorious for having problems with their drivers. Spending between 0 and 0 bucks on a graphics card and then having it screw up on you is not a good thing. N Vidia of course has had some problems. However, they have drastically improved their quality and have rare problems with drivers.
The second topic would be if you have a computer that can support AGP graphics. PCI is good, but it is frail in comparison to the quality of graphics that an AGP card can produce.
A third thing to think about would be how much video ram do you really need? If a person was just going to use a computer for casual work and a little video viewing, a 32 meg graphics card might be good for that person. If you are a gamer, it might be a good idea to buy either a 64 meg or if you have some money(399 bucks) a very nice 128 meg graphics card.
After you have routed out the amount of ram you want you should look and see if that ram is SDRAM or DDR ram. DDR is a faster ram that has the capability of running at about twice the speed of regular SDRAM.
When you have made all of these grueling decisions, there are still more to come. What video processor are you looking for? The processor is what makes you have the clearest, most flawless picture possible. They range from 200 to 400 mhz depending on what you are going to use it for.
Lastly, you should consider special features like Duel VGA, out which supports 2 monitors at once, or S Video out, which can be used to hook up to your television.
After you have made your decisions about buying the card, you now have one last thing to think about. Does your cheezy monitor have the capability to properly display the awesomeness of your graphics card?
