Shortly after Opera said they cast off legacy code for speed for their upcoming version 7, Mozilla has started development on a "a new, swifter Web browser" called Phoenix that is "a redesign of the Mozilla browser component, similar to Galeon, K-Meleon and Chimera, but written using the XUL user interface language and designed to be cross-platform" and aims to be "a lean and fast browser that doesn't skimp on features." Its features currently include a customizeable toolbar, quicksearch for bookmarks and history, improved start-up speed over Mozilla, an overhauled bookmarks manager, a new look, and reasonable default settings that should just "do the right thing". They are later planning on adding other features such as Satchel (a replacement for Mozilla's Wallet functionality that includes major usability improvements like the often-requested inline autocomplete of webforms), a plug-in and add-on manager, and an improved download manager for the upcoming version 0.2 release.
Phoenix, right now, is still pretty new, so not all of its features may work properly. If you find a bug, be sure to check to see if it is a known issue that is being worked on. Then, follow their guidelines on what to do before reporting a bug to verify that the problem still exists in the latest build and to verify that no one else has reported the bug before you to prevent duplicate bug reports. When reporting bugs, "put as much relevant detail into the bug report as you can."
[Update October 8, 2002]: Linux Orbit now has a review of Phoenix version 0.2.
