One of The Register’s latest articles by Thomas C Greene really made me think. The author Mr. Greene was comparing the Washington D.C sniper shootings to the latest internet attack against the root servers. The Point he seemed to be trying to make was that these attacks on the net are nothing, they don’t affect lives, if the entire internet was out for a few days it wouldn’t much matter. And to his article I give this response.
It’s impossible to compare hackings to killings. I agree with you that the internets disruption wouldn’t affect people nearly as much as the killings, but it’s contemptuous to assume the primary use of the internet is for software pirates, pornography, and pirated music. That analysis seems incredibly cynical considering that you did just upload your story to The Register right? The simple fact is, it’s impossible to compare something like the internet to an actual human life.
