The author of www.svbxlabs.com was able to design and implement a herf weapon which he demonstrates with pictures and video as he destroys a video camera at a proximity of 5 meters.
The author explains and photo graphs all his experiments and shows that even a idiot can make thier own herf weapon by simply taking apart a microwave, and fitting a wave guide and cone around the magnetron.According to data and applications on the authors site, you can transform an 800 watt microwave into a herf gun that would be effective at upto 50 feet. svbxlabs talks about alot more details and advanced equations that I won't go into. The author leads me to believe that with a larger Magnetron and a an increased power a simple "microwave herf gun" could be made that when aimed at anything electronic would permently destroy it. It's too bad law enforcement haven't started using technlology like this, it could probably save lives.
Protection
According to a HERF/EMP hobbyist (omjamal)who studied radio and telegraphy for years, and electrical engineering for a year and who also runs/owns 4hv.org, the only way to protect a computer from radio weaponry or "herf" is by using the "faraday cage"method. This can be done by wraping metalic shielding on and around an entire system.To completely protect all of your system, you would need to cover the keyboard, mouse, all wires going in and out of the system, and even the case of the computer (which alone, can't be used as a faraday cage because of the gaps in the steal).
