Lawrence R. Rogers at CERT wrote an excellent article on securing your home computer. He talks about how intruders can break into computers, how to protect your computer from them, and how to be proactive so there would be a lower chance of some new exploit or virus affecting your computer. He does a very nice job at showing similarity between computer security and real life security models such as showing the similarity of a "firewall" to a guard at a place of employement who only allows employees with a badge in and limits what access visitors have in the building. He also discusses the importance of making backups regularly, using strong passwords, and keeping your system patched from vulnerabilities that may allow an intruder to break in and wipe your files or to use your computer to break into other computers.
