Researchers at UMASS of Amherst have found a way to convert ordinary sugar into electricity with an efficiency of eighty percent. Researchers Professor Derek Lovley and postdoctoral researcher Swades Chaudhuri discovered that Rhodoferax ferrireducens a micro organism can be used to covert carbohydrates directly into electricity. For now, the end result is a cup of sugar that can power a 60 watt light bulb for seventeen hours.
