New apple devices

AppleHas apple created a new PDA device and updated the Ipod video?

According to articles floating around the rumor mill (see ARS Technica) Apple is in the process of acquiring Palm. Also, Apple has recently patented what seems to look a lot like a tablet based touch screen Mac see macobserver.com. Note apple has been including handwriting technology know as Inkwell into its latest operating system see Apple.com To further suspicion ThinkSecret has complete details of a touch screen based ipod that no longer uses the click wheel, but instead uses a touch screen. Which will keep the ipod itself the same size, but allow for much larger screen sizes. Engadget.com has posted actual illustrations of the tablet device . And Worldofapple.com has posted an actual video demonstration of the touch screen capabilities of the new devices.

The easy way to .Tivo decryption

HackingShahar Prish has released a new tool for those with series 2 tivo's connected to there home network. The tool effectively strips the builtin password protection / "Codec" that tivo uses and spits out a clean mpeg 2 file.

Although the tool only runs in windows, it effectively opens the door to watching tivo recordings on your mac or linux box by running the tool in vmware or virtual pc.

see link below for more info.

Linksys WRTG54GS 4.50.6 Broken

Security 2 meA recent article posted by Steve Scherf on bugtraq illistrates an interesting problem with the linksys WRT54GS.

From the article:
It appears that firmware version 4.50.6 for the Linksys WRT54GS (hardware version 1) wireless router allows wireless clients to connect and use the network without actually authenticating. With WPA Personal/TKIP authentication enabled, the unit allows both clients using encryption with the correct settings and key, and clients not using any encryption. It disallows clients attempting to use encryption with the wrong settings and/or key.

Blah blah bidiblah

SecurityDurring Defcon authors from Sencepost demonstrated an all in one application that combines the features of nessus, nmap, and metasploit. They've created one of the first tools that I've seen where you scan your entire network, and use real exploits to verify nessus isn't reporting false positives. Bidiblah unfortunatly currently only runs on windows.

Edit/ Playback tivo files on your mac

AppleUse iMovie and/or iDVD with your EyeTV/ Tivo recordings

iMovie and iDVD require DV format files. EyeTV/Tivo records in MPEG-1 & MPEG-2
format. Unfortunately, QuickTime will lose the audio when exporting
MPEG-1/2 to other movie formats. To keep the audio, you'll need to
separate ("de-mux") the MPEG-1/2 audio and video streams. You'll then
need to convert the MPEG-1/2 audio to AIFF format. We recommend using
the following free applications:

bbDEMUX
(a free MPEG demuxer which is for OS X)
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/macbbdemux/

MAD
(a free audio conversion tool for OS X)
http://www.biermann.org/philipp/mad/

You'll also need QuickTime Pro to export to DV.

Do the following to use your EyeTV files with iMovie or iDVD:

1. Export a recorded program from EyeTV, by using the File -->
Save as QuickTime command.
2. Use bbDEMUX on the exported EyeTV file. You'll get a video
file which ends with .m1v, and an audio file that ends with .m1a.
3. Use MAD to convert the .m1a file into AIFF format.
4. Use iMovie to import the AIFF file - it shows up as an audio
track at the bottom of the screen.
5. Use the QuickTime Player to export the .m1v file to DV by
using the File --> Export command.
6. Please note that the DV file size that iMovie accepts is
limited to 2GB (9 minutes or less). Trim your video file into smaller
segments before trying to import it.
7. Use iMovie to import the DV file - it shows up as a video clip
on the top right of the screen.
8. Drag the video clip to the bottom of the screen, and now the
video is synched back up with the audio.

Now you can use iMovie to do whatever you want with your EyeTV / Tivo
recording. You can export your movie to QuickTime format, or keep it
in DV format for use with iDVD.
